PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA EXPERIENCES HIGHEST TOURISM GROWTH PERCENTAGE IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Virginia – September 7, 2017 – Tourism marketing agency Discover Prince William & Manassas is pleased to share that tourism economic impact surged to new heights in 2016. The county experienced the highest percentage growth year over year when compared to its Northern Virginia peers including the City of Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties.  

“The amount of growth in tourism dependent business development over the past several years is unprecedented,” said Ann Marie Maher, President & CEO of Discover Prince William & Manassas. “With the construction of several new hotels, local craft beverage and dining developments, and the ongoing investment into new entertainment, shopping and sports tourism venues – the destination continues to grow as a place to visit and stay for domestic and international visitors and these types of investments add to the overall quality of life for residents and businesses in Prince William County,” she added.

According to research released by the U.S. Travel Association and the Virginia Tourism Corporation this week, tourism in Prince William County generated over $570 million in travel related expenditures in 2016, an increase of 5.4% compared to 2015 and supported 6,522 jobs, a 4.8% increase vs. 2015. Visitor related tax receipts in the County provided over $34 million dollars in both local and state receipts that support schools, roads, infrastructure and other services. Tourism in Prince William County provides an average state and local tax savings of over $253 for each Prince William County household.

While other destinations in Northern Virginia are larger in density and volume, Prince William County leads the pack among its neighbors in year over year tourism expenditure growth at 5.4% when compared to Fairfax County at 3.4%, Loudoun County at 2.9%, the City of Alexandria at 2.4% and Arlington County at 2.0%. United States GDP grew at a 1.6% increase in 2016.

“Virginia’s tourism industry is a critical component of the new Virginia economy, providing jobs for our citizens and funneling millions of dollars back into our communities,” said Governor Terry McAuliffe.

Tourism revenue in Virginia has grown by $2.2 billion since 2014 with a compound annual growth rate of 3.3%. Visitor spending in Virginia supports 230,000 jobs and provides $1.7 billion in state and local taxes. The commonwealth welcomed more than more than 45 million visitors in 2016 – a record high in Virginia.
