Feb 24 2:00 pm Secret of the Cardboard Rocket: Adventure through the solar system in the Cardboard Rocket! Travel with two children and their navigator, the talking astronomy book. Visit the Sun, the planets, the Moon and more. The narration track was edited in 2007 for the reclassification of Pluto to dwarf planet. References to “smallest planet,” “ninth planet,” and “last planet” were removed and Pluto is simply termed a planet in view of it being a new category of planet. Feb 24 3:30 pm Laser Spirit of America: A laser program that celebrates the accomplishments and dreams of humanity. Utilizing a wonderful mix of pop, classic rock, oldies, adult contemporary, and patriotic music, Laser Spirit is a motivating laser show that will make you proud to be a visionary, idealist, achiever and American. This program is accompanied with stirring laser effects, beautiful background artwork and images that all come together to produce an uplifting and inspirational experience. Visitors of all ages will enjoy this fun and unique laser presentation! Feb 24 5:00 pm Astronaut: The exploration of space is the greatest endeavor that humankind has ever undertaken. What does it take to be part of this incredible journey? What does it take to become an astronaut? Experience a rocket launch from inside the body of an astronaut. Explore the amazing worlds of inner and outer space, from floating around the International Space Station to maneuvering through microscopic regions of the human body. Discover the perils that lurk in space as we subject ‘Chad’, our test astronaut, to everything that space has to throw at him. Feb 24 6:30 pm Dynamic Earth: Dynamic Earth explores the inner workings of Earth’s climate system, following a trail of energy that flows from our Sun into the interconnected systems that create our climate. You’ll ride on swirling ocean and wind currents, dive into the heart of a hurricane, come face-to-face with sharks and whales and fly into fiery volcanoes! This fulldome planetarium show is the result of a two-year collaboration between Spitz Creative Media, the advanced visualization lab at the National Center of Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, and Thomas Lucas Productions Inc. Produced in association with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and NASA Earth Science. Narrated by Academy Award-nominated actor Liam Neeson. Attachments

Every Day Full of Work: The African American Experience at Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond Historic Site is proud to present special guided tours in recognition of African-American History Month. Visitors can explore the historic home and the original slave quarter to learn about the enslaved population living at Ben Lomond in the years before the Civil War. Visit spaces not ordinarily open to the public and participate in hands-on activities to learn about some of the chores that enslaved men, women, and children, were expected to complete, as well as the lives of the enslaved community.  

Lucasville School Open House

Join us as we celebrate African American History Month at historic Lucasville School with our open house weekends in February. Visit the reconstructed 19th century school used by the community of Lucasville. Learn surprising facts of African American history in Prince William County and throughout the Northern Virginia region. Each weekend, enjoy a different activity in the schoolhouse, from tours and crafts, to photograph exhibits.

The Underground Railroad Network to Freedom

The Leesylvania property is associated with the flight of two runaway slaves as well as a slave who escaped in 1848. A band of escaped slaves also informed Union soldiers of Confederate activity at the property's Freestone Point in September 1861. Learn about aspects of the park's rich and diverse history as we celebrate Black History Month. Displays will illustrate our inclusion into the National Park Services Network to Freedom program. Heroes Among Us

Heroes Among Us" is a new veteran-focused event at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Representatives from service organizations, both private and government, will be on hand to help veterans navigate life after the military. There will also be informative talks and demonstrations. A highlight of the event will be overview tours of our Final Phase galleries that are under construction. The new galleries cover USMC history from 1976 to 2015. Attachments

Where They Slept: Spend the Night in Ben Lomond's Slave Quarter

The Slave Quarter at Ben Lomond is one of only three to survive to this day in Prince William County that can help tell the story of the many enslaved African Americans who had to live and work for a lifetime in which freedom and choice were taken away. Join us for an exclusive opportunity to spend the night in the original slave quarter where throughout the evening, historians and interpreters will help you learn about the people who lived and worked at Ben Lomond, and how they worked to survive and resist. A continental breakfast is included. Reservations are required for space is limited.
