National Museum of the Marine Corps Volunteer & Docent Training

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is seeking individuals to volunteer within museum departments as well as on the museum floor as docents. Candidates will be trained in Marine Corps history and basic museum studies. The training course begins on Saturday, February 04, 2017 (9:00 AM - 1:00 PM). Schedule of training: Feb 4 & 11 (9 AM - 1 PM)-- Initial training of volunteers* and docents Feb 18, 25; Mar 4, 11, 18, 25; Apr 1, 8 (9 AM - 1 PM)-- Docent training continues every Saturday for 8 weeks after initial training. *Additional Volunteer training will be determined by each Museum department. National Museum of the Marine Corps' Annual MRE Cook-off

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is looking for a few good cooks to compete in our Annual MRE Cook-off! Here are the guidelines for the cook-off: 1. Contestants “blindly” pull 2 MREs from a box 2. Contestants will create one meal from the 2 MREs for presentation to a panel of judges. 3. Contestants can bring any special ingredients they can fit into a gallon plastic bag (approximately the size of a cargo pocket on the utility uniform) to use to enhance their meal. 4. The Museum will furnish heating elements and other basic supplies. After tasting all the contestants' meals, our judges will choose one skilled “chef” to take home the coveted Golden Canteen Cup! This is always a fun event to attend. We hope you will join us! There are only 8 competitor spots available for the MRE Cook-off. The deadline for entering is Feb 2. This visual and impactful body of work shares some of our Nation’s Capital outside of the usual tourist areas. The Exposure Group represents the gamut of subject matter including landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, architectural, and photojournalism. This exhibit will fascinate anyone with an interest in photography. The art will speak for itself. A century and a half later, his great-great-granddaughter Geneva Lindner and her husband follow his Civil War trail through Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Geneva sets out to trace his life from birth through the Civil War and, finally, to his death, and the grave marker that was meant for someone else. History In Your Hands

HIYH is a program for visitors of all ages who are blind or have low vision. HIYH is an opportunity to interact with the collections through tactile exploration of selected objects, and through verbal description, tactile graphics, and other materials for artifacts that cannot be touched. Polar Plunge Festival

Put on your brave—just don't forget your swimsuit—for the Northern VA Polar Plunge® Fest, where hundreds will dash into the icy Potomac. In addition to your icy dip, you can strut your stuff on the beach in your best Plunge costume, listen to the live band, or win some COOL door prizes! The Festival will take place at Tim's Rivershore Restaurant & Crabhouse from 10 am to 4 pm. Registration opens at 10 am; the costume contest starts at 2 pm; and plunging begins around 3 pm (subject to tides). It's $100 to Plunge, but the more you raise, the COOLER the incentives! Students also are welcome to join us for the Cool School Challenge. Don't miss out on the COOLEST winter beach party in NOVA there is! Barnes House Hard Hat Tour

The house was the home to an African American family after the Civil War. Learn about the family’s amazing history during the Reconstruction-era and learn about the restoration of the building. The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine

Founded in 1918, The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine is one of Eastern Europe’s most esteemed orchestras, earning international acclaim for its virtuosity and precision. Deeply rooted in the rich musical traditions of Eastern Europe and Russia, the orchestra is celebrated for its adventurous high-energy repertoire and vibrant performances. Under the baton of Conductor Laureate, Theodore Kuchar, the orchestra performs Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, and ballet music by Ukraine composer Stankovych. Alexei Grynyuk — who is “among the finest” according to Grammophone Magazine — joins the orchestra to perform Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor.
